He wept…
(Learnt…Serial Post …7/19)
It is said that John 11:35 is the shortest verse in the Bible. The verse has only two words: Jesus wept. Though short, it conveys to us a meaning, very deep and sublime. To many, even today, the scene continues to be a baffling phenomenon. How can(the Son of)God, who wields power over the whole creation, including life and death, weep (that too) over the death of someone whom he is going to resurrect shortly?
I intend to focus a little more, a little deep, little longer on this incident, in order to understand as to what really caused tears to flows from the eyes of our dear Saviour, that particular day.
In our generation, in our times, people opine that weeping is a sign of weakness. Strong willed men do not cry. Mature men don't weep. They know to control their emotions. Weeping and sobbing is woman's property. Even if the situation is gruesome and grieving, we all must learn to hold our tears back, the s0-called civilized society teaches. But here is Jesus, the maker of heaven and earth, being moved to tears, triggered by the sorrow and anguish of a sister, who had lost her only younger brother. Leave alone the resurrection miracle, Doesn't Jesus (the author of life) know the reality that death is appointed unto all men? Then, what moved him to tears that day? His tears, even made the on-lookers pose a reasonably fair question? They asked, if he loved them so much, why did allow the person to die, in the first place? Didn't he possess the power to heal him, when he was on his death bed? Didn't he possess the authority to send a word (like he did to Centurion's servant) to revive him? But, Jesus, had allowed him to die, or in other words, he responded to the SOS of sisters so late that by the time he could come, he was dead and buried for four days! Why do you think he cried?
Couple of days ago, the news of a doctor from Chennai who lost his life treating Corona patients captured the headlines. More than his death, the pathetic incident of his mortal remains being whisked away from being buried has drawn much ire and censure from medical community and humanitarian champions. Two doctors, in one week not only suffered death but were denied a decent burial! It is really heartbreaking that they are receiving a treatment, which they deserve the least. There were comments all over the media, lamenting over the attitude of protesters who opposed this. But who could avert or minimize the extent of fear psychosis which has crept in the minds of a commoner about this disease's dreadfulness. A friend of the deceased and member of medical the fraternity has posted a moving video not only reproving the act of some people, but begging the Government to safeguard the warriors on field.
Yes, it is indeed saddening. But what has got to do with John 11:35?
