My
sheep hear my voice…
In the world in which we are living today,
particularly in this information-digital age, there is not only frenzied activity
everywhere, but there is just too much noise, too many voices coming from many
different quarters. Whether it is a television channel or social media platform,
there are opinions, counter opinions, debates and more debates.
More often than not, these debates rather than being constructive, end
up as cacaphony of opinions.
Imagine this. If I were to call my son
from a small group or crowd I can just call his name to draw his
attention. But if he is embroiled in a crowd
with so much of noise in the environment,
I will not be able to reach him, even if I shout at my highest
decibel. Reason. His ears and (even mine) is completely
clogged by the noise around. It is not
that easy. One would require highest
amount of attention, focus, concentration to be able to single out one voice in
that crowd. Maybe a nickname, maybe a
pet name would help, I suppose.
Though our focal point, in this passage
will always be on what did God say? And
how Elijah responded. A point which
would miss our attention and which gains
importance, especially at a time like this is the focus that this man, despite his
dejected state of mind, had on God and
his voice. When God's word came for the first time the
question was the same, What are you doing here, Elijah? Here means
Cave. God asked him to come and stand on the mount.
The Bible says that God indeed passed
by. He let a wind, an earthquake, a fire
to go before. Elijah was still in the
cave. None of these things caused his
exit from the cave. Was he protecting
himself in the cave or was it
something else? How could he remain
unmoved.
Elijah heard
the still small voice and came out covering his face, to meet the
Lord. The Bible is silent on what the
still small voice would have communicated to him. Can you think of what that still small voice
would have told Elijah? How could
someone who had just come under the conglomerate of noises decipher the voice
of God? At times, we associate
ourselves with Elijah when we are downcast.
But Elijah was still a different man.
Do you know why?
